Dear Athletes and Families:

It was great to see such a large, enthusiatic group at Sunday's special club event.   A good time was had by all!

We have some important announcements on upcoming events:

1.  Big Game this Saturday vs. Cal at 11:30am in the Avery Aquatic Stadium Pool.  Fourth-ranked Cal will travel to second-ranked Stanford for an MPSF match against its Bay Area rival.  You won't want to miss the fierce battle between these two potent teams.  Also, Saturday is Senior Day as it is the last regular-season home game and all five graduating Seniors will be honored.  Please don't forget to wear your Stanford gear (if you don't have any, please stop by the Team Shop booth at the entrance gate)!

2.  On-line Winter Registration will commence this Sunday, November 14th.  The practice dates and tentative competition schedule are posted on the website Club Calendar.  If you are a first-time athlete to our club you may take advantage of a two-week trial period.  See registration page for details.

3.  We have launched our Winter Session Clothing line and it's available now!  Please check out the updated Team Shop on the club website at www.stanfordwaterpoloclub.com.  We have added:

Mesh Workout Shorts - Black
GildanTM Sweatpants - Black
TimberlineTM Fleece Vest - Black
Timberline TM Fleece Jacket - Black
(all bearing our club logo and available in
Men’s S, M, L, and XL sizes)

These would make wonderful holiday gifts!  We also now carry our gray logo t-shirt in youth sizes for all those up and coming water polo players.  The Team Shop will be at all remaining Stanford home games and upcoming MPSF and NCAA tournaments.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at joanne_harmon@yahoo.com.

Stanford Boys Water Polo Club

Sunday, November 7, 2004 after the Long Beach Game at Noon. The Stanford Boy’s Water Polo Club would like to invite all fall, winter, spring & summer Stanford Water Polo Club families to a picnic and autograph session with the Stanford Varsity players immediately after the Long Beach game.

The Club will provide free food, and as a special treat we will provide free Team Photos of the Stanford Varsity for you to have autographed. This is such a cool, high quality photo; it is something you will keep forever. Sit down and enjoy a Gatorade with Tony Azevedo and ask him for advice on stretching, weightlifting, and shooting; or ask Greg Crum if he really shot a 100 mile-per-hour backhand against Pacific last year. Ask Peter Varellas how he balances a high grade point average with the rigors of training; or ask Thomas Hopkins how he became Junior Class President at Stanford University last month!!!

This is a very special event for our Club. It will be relaxed and just a great time for our Club to get together and celebrate as a family of families. Bring your parents and your grandparents.

LOCATION of the Club lunch is just behind the stadium bleachers, on the observation deck overlooking the diving stadium. Please wear your Stanford Water Polo shirt to the game.

Dear Beginner Athletes and Parents-

The beginner group will be scrimmaging with the girl's beginner group this Sunday, October 24th.  The scrimmage will take place at Avery pool and will start around 12:30 PM.  Athletes should be there at the normal practice time (12:00 Noon - 2:00 PM).

Thank you.

October 18, 2004

Dear Athletes and Parents,

There are two upcoming dates we would like you to be aware of:

1. October 20 at 8:30am. The Big Splash (CAL Varsity versus Stanford Men's Varsity) is November 20 at 9:30am at CAL Berkeley, three hours before the football game. Due to the stands being literally on top of the pool, this event is known as one of the most intense one hour competitions in college sports. Two years ago, Greg Crum received a pass from Tony Azevedo to win the game with a last-second skip shot. CAL versus Stanford Men's Varsity Water Polo is at CAL this year. To avoid the historical 2-hour lines and increasing popularity of the event, CAL is selling all seats in advance. The event may sell out on the first day of advance ticket sales. Many Stanford Water Polo Club parents take their kids to this event so we have researched the best way to get tickets. Tickets will go on sale October 20 at 8:30am at CAL's ticket office which is 1-800-462-3277. Stanford Water Polo Club parents are requesting seats in the "Gold Section which is the lower right" portion of the stands. We assume that the tickets will sell out that day as CAL's stadium only has 500 seats. The CAL Athletic Ticket office is open Monday - Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm. All tickets are $15 each  and there is a minimum $5 transaction/mailing/handling.

This is a wonderful opportunity to treat your family to one of the greatest rivalries in water polo history, and see the CAL campus awash in tail gate parties before the Big Game. Most people say this water polo game is as fun to watch as the NCAA Championship games because there is so much pride in the faces of the players. Tony Azevedo and several seniors will be playing their final Big Splash.

2. November 7, 2004 after the Long Beach Game at Noon. The Stanford Water Polo Club would like to invite all fall, winter, spring & summer Stanford Water Polo Club families to a picnic and autograph session with the Stanford Varsity players immediately after the Long Beach game. The Club will provide free food, and as a special treat we will provide free Team Photos of the Stanford Varsity for you to have autographed. Sit down and enjoy a  Gatorade with Tony Azevedo and ask him for advice on stretching, weightlifting, and shooting; or ask Greg Crum if he really shot a 100 mile-per-hour backhand against U.O.P. last year.

Thank you.

October 4, 2004

Dear Athletes and Parents,

We have some very exciting news!!  Tuesday night, October 5th, our very own Tony Azevedo, Greg Crum (who was Stanford’s leading scorer in last week’s win over USC), and former Stanford All-American Peter Hudnut, will put on a skills clinic for our age groupers during their practice! The skills clinic will run 6:15 - 8:30PM. Beginners are invited to stay until 8:30.

This will be a great experience for our fall athletes.  Azevedo, Crum, and Hudnut will talk with the boys about shooting and demonstrate a variety of shooting techniques. The boys will then join them in the water to work on what they have learned.

Only players enrolled in the Fall Program will be in the pool, but previous session Club members may attend and sit quietly on the pool deck and observe. Parents are welcome on the pool deck as well, and we can guarantee that you will never forget being so close to the shots and strategy used by the player often referred to as "the greatest player in the history of American Water Polo."

Hope to see everyone there!

John Vargas                                                 Brian Kreutzkamp

Note:  Tony Azevedo and Greg Crum will be donating their time to this Club event.  After 3 hours in the pool for their regular practice, we are deeply appreciative that these players want to help the younger athletes in the Club.

September 23, 2004

We encourage all Stanford Water Polo Club athletes and their families to come out this Saturday, September 25th to cheer on the Cardinal as they face the USC Trojans in a rematch of last year’s NCAA championship game. This promises to be collegiate water polo at its best. Wear your red and white!!

Please welcome Tony Azevedo back to his first home game since the Olympics. We hope to fill the stadium with fans who want to recognize a player who, after two Olympics and three NCAA Most Valuable Player awards, has chosen to delay a professional contract and play his final season at Stanford.

Game time is 1:30pm at Avery Aquatic Center. Due to increased attendance at water polo games, the Aquatic Center now uses the permanent ticket windows at Sunken Diamond Baseball Stadium, just 100 yards away. Tickets will go on sale at 12:00 noon on Saturday. This event is expected to be a sell-out so plan on arriving early! Tickets are $6 ($4 for youth and seniors).

Thank you,

STANFORD WATER POLO CLUB
2004 BOY’S FALL SESSION

 Dear Athletes and Parents,

Welcome to the 2004 Stanford Water Polo Club fall session!  Athletes will learn the dynamics of hard work, problem solving and good sportsmanship while developing strong friendships.  This program is designed for boys who are not currently playing high school water polo. There is no minimum age or skills requirement but it is helpful if athletes do have some swimming background.

If you know a boy who would like to try water polo, fall is a great time to start. For the fall session, a two-week trial membership is available at no charge to new members.

The Stanford Water Polo Club is the premiere program in the area, having teams ranked in the top ten and having players selected for National Teams and All-American honors at the National Junior Olympics.  All coaches have extensive playing experience and have worked with athletes of all ages and skill levels.

The fall session will run from Tuesday, September 7th through Sunday, October 31st. A tentative practice schedule is posted on the “Practice Groups & Schedule” page.

We will participate in the Fall League against other teams in our area.  A number of athletes will be selected to compete at the Speedo Cup that takes place in St. Louis, Missouri in early November.  Speedo Cup brings the best age group teams from each zone for four days of outstanding competition.  If interested, please fill out the availability for this tournament on the online registration form.

Registration is only available online (click here for Registration Form). Deadline for registration is September 5.  Registrations received after September 5th will incur a $50 late charge.   Please make sure the following forms are completed:

Team clothing is available at the “Team Shop” page. We strongly encourage everyone to have the team swimsuit for all games. The final date for ordering team clothing is Sept 10th.  This will be our only order for the fall, so please keep this in mind if you need extra suits, towels or shirts throughout the season.

To ensure the highest quality of our program, we will be limiting the number of participants in each practice group.  They will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. We are expecting all groups to be full this fall, so please register at your earliest convenience to ensure a spot.

We are looking forward to a great season!

June 22, 2004

Dear Athletes & Parents:

This is a very busy and exciting time for our club. The Junior Olympic Qualification Tournament for the 18's and 16's went extremely well.  Congratulations!  We hope you a chance to attend last night's Riekes Center presentation "The Nutrition Key".  The Riekes Center offered us this complimentary session with nutritionist David Ellis to assist our young athletes to live a happy, healthy and productive life. Emphasis was placed on issues that affect short-term and long-term health, including quick fixes, miracle foods, supplements and appropriate weight gain and loss. The presentation was thoroughly enjoyed by all that attended.

A few announcements:

1.  JO's - Because of airline requirements, the balance of the Junior Olympic trip is now due.  Most of you paid a $250 deposit so the balance due is $550. Please mail to Joanne Harmon at the address below as soon as possible.

2.  More JO's - Thank you to Mason Brutschy, Mike Child, Paul & Yannick Rochester, Mary Kiely, Janet Wilson, Bruce Avery, Bill Rollinson, Anna & Tom Cole,  Tracy Cowperthwaite, Walter Griffeth, Moris Clark, Norm Havercroft, Chris Straube and Bill Galliani for graciously stepping up to come out to Ft. Lauderdale and chaperone our athletes. It is greatly appreciated.

3.  JO Quals - Good luck this weekend to the 14&U and 12&U teams!  The tournament information and schedule is posted below.  Please scroll down to the June 17 message.

3.  Clothing - Is in this week!  It will be sorted and distributed very soon.

4.  This weekend's tournament - 18's and 16's. Below are the rosters and list of games for this weekend's Inter-Club scrimmage held at Sacred Heart Prep.
