Premier League Comes To Northern California 3/15 & 3/16:  This weekend marks the return of the Division I Premier League to Northern California.  Saturday and Sunday, March 15th & 16th, the top players in the country will hit the pool at the SODA Aquatics Center in Moraga to compete in the highest level of domestic competition held in the United States.  Over 20 Stanford Water Polo Club athletes have participated in the Division I Premier League over its 10-year history, and this weekend’s tournament will feature Stanford Club Athlete Paul Rudolph (playing for Pacific Zone) and Coach Marco Palazzo (playing for the New York Athletic Club).

Stanford Water Polo Club will pay the entrance fee for all Spring Session registered athletes throughout the weekend.  There will be a sign in sheet, which athletes need to sign at the entrance of the SODA Aquatics Center.  Having the opportunity to watch such high level water polo is an important part of the development for all our club athletes and we encourage everyone to try and attend as many games as possible throughout the weekend.  A schedule of this weekend’s games can be found on the USA Water Polo web site.  www.usawaterpolo.com

Special Events:

Coach Vargas' Impact Day (Date TBD): During the upcoming session Coach Vargas, along with select members of the Stanford Varsity Team, will hold an "impact day" of training for all spring registered athletes. During this "impact day," Coach Vargas and the Stanford Varsity players will conduct practices that are designed to have an impact on each athlete's game. Athletes will learn and/or improve upon position-specific skills. For advanced players, Coach Vargas will teach techniques that are used at the Olympic level, where Coach Vargas has played and coached. For younger players, Coach Vargas and the coaching staff will evaluate individual skills and will communicate specific steps that will help athletes attain a higher level of play and understanding of the game.

(Updated): Strength Development Program Stanford Strength Coach, Dan Ammon, will be offering a strength development program this session for our high school athletes. Dan currently trains the Men’s Water Polo Team at Stanford University and was responsible for creating the dynamic strength program which a number of our club athletes participated in last summer. The program is designed for athletes who have a background in strength training and are looking to engage in a challenging conditioning program. This program will be open to high school athletes only, and workouts will be held at Stanford University.

The Strength Development Program is a unique opportunity to train each athlete for the physical demands of water polo. Focus is placed on the development of each athlete’s strength, power, and flexibility, all fundamental components necessary for high-level athletic performance.  Athletes will learn to build strength and agility while performing challenging and exciting workout routines, all while being in a controlled and educational environment.

Detailed information can be found by clicking here

Premier League Weekend (March 15th & 16th):  This weekend, the nation’s top male water polo players will compete in the second of three tournaments of the 2008 Division I Premier League.  The league, now in its ninth season, is comprised of the top high school, college, post-college, National, and ex-National Team players.  Premier League brings elite domestic water polo to various venues throughout the country each year and features four of the nation’s top club teams and four U.S. National Zone Teams. During the weekend we will attend games as a club to watch and learn from this exciting, high-level water polo. Details TBA.

Invitational Scrimmage Games (Dates TBD):  We will be scheduling scrimmage games with club teams from the area.  Details to come as they become available.

San Diego County Cup (May 2-4, 2008):  For the fifth straight year, the Stanford Water Polo Club will be sending teams to compete at the San Diego County Cup.  This tournament is for Age Group athletes only and is known as one of the most competitive tournaments in the country.  Selection of athletes for these teams will take place during the spring session and will be based on practice attendance, attitude, ability level and availability.

Pacific Zone Spring League: All Age Group I and II athletes will participate in the Pacific Zone Spring League. The league provides athletes with great competition against other clubs from within the Pacific Zone. Competition dates* are: March 16th, March 30th, April 13th, and April 20th.
*These dates can also be found on our Calendar.

Junior Olympics Selection:  During the Spring Session, the coaching staff will be evaluating athletes for the summer Junior Olympic teams.  Our 2008 Summer Session is currently scheduled to begin on Monday, May 12th.  This year, the 2008 National Junior Olympics will be held in Southern California (Irvine, CA) July 26th - July 29th.  The JO Qualifying Tournament (mandatory for all athletes selected for JO’s) dates are as follows*:

12&U athletes (born in 1996 and younger):  June 20-22
14&U athletes (born in 1994 and 1995):  June 20-22

18&U athletes (born in 1990 and 1991):  June 20-22
*These dates can also be found on our Calendar.

Micro Clinics (See dates below):  During March, we will be running four one-day clinics for beginner level athletes, ages 11 & under.  These clinics are designed to introduce the sport of water polo to boys who have little to no experience, but are interested in getting their “feet wet.” During these one-day clinics we will give athletes a basic introduction to the sport of water polo while providing them with a fun and exciting learning experience.  We encourage all of our club families to help spread the word about our March Micro Clinics! Registration for these clinics will take place at the venue on the day of each clinic.  (There will be no pre-registration.)
