Updated: Tuesday, November 14, 2006
Our 2006-2007 Winter Session is just around the corner, and we are just 4 weeks away from getting all of our athletes back in the water.
The winter session marks the return of all our high school athletes from their fall high school seasons along with the continued play of all of our age group athletes. We are excited about the opportunity to continue teaching our athletes to be the best water polo players that they can be and are extremely enthused about the success that local teams on all levels enjoyed during this past fall season. From our age group athletes’ excellent performance during the Pacific Zone Championships and qualifying for a 4th straight Speedo Cup, to all of our high school athletes who enjoyed a great fall, including many who helped their teams qualify for CCS. The overall level of play clearly continues to rise in our area and we are looking forward to continuing the development of all of our athletes during the upcoming session.
Some highlights of the upcoming session include: participation in the Pacific Zone Winter League, Stanford Club intra-squad scrimmages, travel trips for select athletes to the Los Alamitos Winter Fest and the South-Florida International Tournament, the opportunity to participate in a camp two-day camp run by the USA Men’s National Team right here at Stanford University, and some new, high paced, high intensity drills and scrimmages set up by Coach Vargas and Coach Barnea.
Olympic Academy Update (11/14): We have just been informed that all Stanford Water Polo Club Athletes that sign up for the upcoming winter session can receive a significant discount to the upcoming USA Men’s National Team Olympic Academy that will be held at the Avery Aquatics Center, Saturday and Sunday, December 9th and 10th. This 2-day program is designed to introduce athletes to the USA "Olympic Style of Play." We are extremely fortunate to have the Men’s National Team come into our back yard and take the time to teach athletes about the sport of water polo. This National Team Academy is a once in a lifetime opportunity for all of our club athletes.
All education and instruction will be provided by past and present USA Men's National Team Coaches and Athletes. Topics of instruction will include; body position and fundamentals, two-meter offense, two-meter defense, counter attack, driving, perimeter play, shooting and field blocking, 6-5 and 5-6, front court offense and defense, coaches roundtables where athletes can ask questions, and goalie training with the Men’s National Goalie Coach.
The Olympic Academy is open to male athletes between the ages of 10-18 years old with at least one season of water polo experience. As mentioned, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for all our club athletes and we strongly encourage all winter session athletes to sign up. The original cost of the camp is $200.00 but all Stanford Club Athletes can sign up for $75.00, only through our winter session registration. Please contact Coach Barnea at jbarnea@gmail.com if you have any questions.
Registration: Registration for our winter session will be available through our web site beginning on Tuesday, November 14th. If you have any questions regarding registration, please email Dawn at stanfordwaterpoloclub@yahoo.com. Registration will close Tuesday, November 28th. Anyone registering after November 28th will need to add the $30 late fee to their payment. (All registration materials must also be postmarked by November 28th to avoid the late fee.)
Session Dates: December 4, 2006 February 11, 2007. We will be breaking for the holidays between the dates of December 18, 2006 January 3, 2007. Practices will resume Thursday, January 4, 2007. Please note: For select athletes, the session may go as long as February 18th. This will be based on an athlete’s selection and participation to a select travel team, and whether that team qualifies for specific tournaments. Athletes who participate on these teams will be charged a small additional fee to cover the cost of the extra week of practice. (Cost will be included in travel expenses.)
Two-Week Trial: If you are new to the club and interested in a two-week trial, payment and all registration materials must be completed in order to participate. (Your check will not be cashed unless you decide to continue with the program.) Please note: The two-week trial is not available to returning club members.
